Diseases treated by cord blood

Hematopoietic stem cells transplantation can be used to treat over 80 disorders. Stem cell could be derived from either bone marrow (peripheral blood) or cord blood. Depending on the type of disease the doctors decide whether it's possible to use the patient's own hematopoietic cells or cells from a donor are needed. The following are groups of diseases and most common types.

Standard treatment

Leukemia (cancer diseases of a certain type of white blood cells in the bone marrow)

Myelodysplastic Syndrome (ineffective production of blood cells often leading to leukemia)

Lymphomas (cancer diseases of white cells in the lymphatic system)
    Hodgkin's lymphoma
    Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas
    Multiple myeloma

Hereditary Erythrocyte Abnormalities (disorders of red blood production and function)
    Thalassemia
    Blackfan Diamond anemia
    Sickle cell anemia
Fanconi anemia (the first ever cord blood transplant)

Red Cell Productions disorders
    Aplastic anemia

Hereditary platelet disorders

Myeloproliferative Disorders

Phagocyte Disorders

Congenital Immune System Disorders
    SCID (sever immunodeficiency)
    Neutropenia

Cancers (not blood cell related)
    Neuroblastoma
    Brain tumors
    Retinoblastoma
    Ewing's Sarcoma

Other Hereditary Syndromes affecting the Immune System and Other Organs

Hereditary Metabolic Diseases (disorders of metabolism leading to degeneration and death)
    Mucopolysacharidosis
    Leukodystrophy (Adrenoleukodystrophy)
    Lysosomal Diseases

Treatment in clinical studies

Autoimmune Disorders (the immune system attacks organism’s own cells)
    Multiple Sclerosis
    Rheumatoid Arthritis
    Type 1 diabetes
    Lupus

Central Nervous System Disorders
Traumatic disorders of the brain at birth
    Children's Cerebral Palsy

Gene Therapies

Cell Cardiomyoplasty (regeneration of damaged cardiac muscles)

Transplantations of Solid Tumors
    Breast Tumors
    Kidney Tumors

Experimental treatments

As part of the first phase of clinical studies doctors are trying to show that treating certain diseases with stem cells could have a better effect than the standard treatment.

Autoimmune Disorders

Reparation of Nerve Cells
    Alzheimer’s Disease
    Parkinson's Disease
    Spinal Cord Injuries
    Strokes
